What are biochemic tissue salts?

The word 'biochemic' comes from the Greek word 'bios', which means 'life' and the word 'chemistry', which is concerned with the chemical changes that take place in living organisms. The modern study of such functions is generally classed as 'biochemistry' whereas biochemics is a more restricted study of specific chemicals in the body, namely mineral salts. The principles of biochemics were devised before modern biochemistry by Dr William H. Schuessler, a German physician from Oldenburg. In 1873, he published papers which outlined the way certain minerals (tissue salts) were essential for the healthy functioning of the human body. He knew that large amounts of inorganic salts existed in the bones, but he also concluded that these compounds occurred in the tissues, fluids and other bodily structures, although he could not measure them. Despite this he came up with a system of medicine that relied on just 12 inorganic salts. These 'tissue' or 'Schuessler' salts, in his opinion were vital to cell function and a deficiency or imbalance would result in illness. With this in mind Dr Schuessler developed remedies from these salts and prepared them using the homoeopathic technique of trituration.

What are the 5 principles of biochemics?

Dr Schuessler dedicated his life to the study of tissue salts and concluded the following basic principles of biochemics:

Are biochemic tissue salts homoeopathic remedies?

Dr Schuessler made it very clear that although his remedies were made homoeopathically, his system of medicine was not homoeopathy. He argued that homoeopathy used preparations that were often completely 'alien' to the human body and some of the raw materials were actually toxic, e.g Rhus tox comes from poison ivy and Arsen alb from arsenic (although compeletely safe when prepared homoeopathically). He claimed that biochemics only uses substances that are part of normal human metabolism to treat an illness. Furthermore, he added that homoeopathy uses the principles of similars to select a remedy where as in biochemics the remedy selected has a specific physiological function. Today many homoeopaths use the tissue salts within their homeoopathy practice, sometimes in ways that do not fit in with Schuessler's principles. This has led to the occasional disagreement between homoeopaths and practitioners of biochemics. This is of no real problem as biochemic tissue salts have been used successfully with very good results in thousands of patients.

How are biochemic tissue salts made?

As already discussed, Dr Schuessler prepared his biochemic remedies using the homoeopathic technique of trituration. This involves mixing one part of the chosen salt and diluting it with 9 parts lactose, which is then gently ground. Once mixed, one part of this is then diluted again with 9 parts of lactose. This is then mixed and ground as before, and repeated a total of 6 times. The resulting mix contains 1 part per million of the original salt and is classed as a 6X potency. The mix could be diluted further, however experience has found that this potency is the most effective and safest for self-treatment. Stronger products can be obtained via a qualified biochemic practitioner. Today, the 6X mix is gently moulded into tablets, which are designed to dissolve within 5 seconds after touching the tongue. This enables the contents to be immediately absorbed into the bloodstream so that they can start working almost instantly.

How do biochemic tissue salts work?

The exact science on how these proven remedies is not fully understood, however it is thought that the tiny amounts found in them encourage the body to correct mineral imbalances, which in turn restores health. The fact is that minerals are essential for normal health as they are needed for a variety of different functions. These include catalysts for enzymes and hormones, as well as helping transport nerves impules and oxygen around the body.

Are biochemic tissue salts safe?

The real benefit of biochemics is that it really does work in many cases without any known side effects or contraindications. The only time they should not be used is if a patient has an intolerance to milk-sugar (lactose intolerant), as the tablets are prepared in a lactose base. Biochemic tissue salts can also be safely taken with conventional medications with no ill effects. Furthermore, they can be used for a variety of different minor ailments, although it is always important to seek medical advice if symptoms persist.

How are tissue salts taken?

Most commercially produced preparations are in tablet form and are designed to be dissolved on the tongue for maximum efficacy. Effects can be evident in a matter of hours in minor ailments, whilst more serious conditions can take up to 6 months to really take effect. In some cases the tablets can be crushed and rubbed onto the skin, e.g. Ferr. Phos. for shingles. Lotions for minor skin ailments can be simply made by dissolving 10 tablets into half a glass of cooled, boiled water.

What is the link of tissue salts with astrology?

For thousands of years man has believed that illness was influenced by the activity of the whole universe and so astrological medicine has long been practised. For this reason, it has been suggested that the 12 tissue salts are in some way linked to the 12 signs of the zodiac. Hence, each star sign has a remedy that responds to it. They are as follows: The idea is that the designated remedy should be taken during illness and alternated with a remedy that closely matches the symptoms. If the symptom remedy is the same as the star sign remedy, it should be changed for one that is opposite to it (the tissue salt that is exactly 6 months apart from the star sign remedy). Many experienced practitioners use this approach, although most modern doctors and scientists dismiss the whole astrological concept.

Combination Tissue Salts

Dr Scheuessler suggested that in certain situations it was better to use more than one of the twelve tissue salts at a time. For this reason many practitioners have since used more than one salt when treating their patients. Years of experience has led to the development of a range of combinations salts that are now widely available commercially. These combination formulas are named alphabetically from A-S (although there is no 'O' remedy) and have specific therapeutic applications. The table below shows the indication for each 'combination remedy' letter and the individual tissue salts they contain in each case:
